Our visit coincided with a spell of high temperatures that caused the elk to be inactive until the last hour before sunset. While the mornings were comfortable the cool night air caused the ground to be blanketed in heavy fog and mist...
We could hear this bull bugling nearby for some time before the mist cleared enough for him to be visible...
The non-typical shape of his antlers made him easy to identify and he seemed to be a favorite subject for the local photographers...
Each time I saw this bull he was in the vicinity of the viewing area on Winslow Hill...
Also near the viewing area were this cow and calf, feasting on fallen apples near the road...
When I saw this bull courting a cow I thought that he was gathering a harem...
Until a dominant bull rushed out to put put the smaller one in his place...
Cows could be seen in many locations. Unless they were nearing estrus they would not be likely to have a bull nearby...
The cows that were near estrus were sure to have at least one bull following closely behind...
When the temperature was in the high 80 degree range the bulls only wanted to remain still and as cool as possible...
This young spike bull was found on Porcupine Run Road...
The lower reaches of Dent's Run Road provided bull sightings for the first time this year...
Dent's Run was also where we saw this young whitetail buck...
If you are thinking about a visit to Benezette there is still time. Cooler temperatures should have the bulls moving all day...
Where else in the East is one likely to find a bull elk strolling through the middle of town...
