Salmon Spawning Run, Salmon River New York

After leaving Pennsylvania one of our camp sites was on the shore of Lake Ontario near Pulaski, New York.  Our timing was perfect to observe the Chinook Salmon spawning run in the Salmon River...

These fish have been in Lake Ontario for from two to five years and are now returning to the river to spawn...

Having a friend with a landing net was a big help...

This lady angler landed her fish without assistance...

For the novice there was plenty of advice to be had from other anglers...

Several records have been set by fish from the Salmon River...

These salmon were headed up the river for a small tributary called Beaver Dam Brook...

On this small stream is the New York Salmon Hatchery where all of these fish began...

This sign, from the hatchery, explains the process...

We were impressed by the frenzied activity of the thousands of salmon trying to return to their place of origin; which was quite a contrast to the peaceful sunsets on Lake Ontario...

Thanks for visiting, be well, and come back soon.
