Great Blue Herons

Great Blue Herons are impressive birds that yield to few other predators when on the hunt...

I spend lots of time around creeks, rivers and ponds while searching for wildlife to photograph. As a result I get to see these beautiful birds often...

This one is at Culler Lake in Frederick...

Their keen eyesight helps them find crayfish, snails and minnows. When this one grabbed what looked like a large water snake I was expecting a struggle for survival. It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity...

After a little preening it continued on...

It slowly approached a spot on the edge of the lake and quickly plucked a fish from the shallow water...

After a couple of adjustments to turn the fish to a head first position it went down the hatch...

While the heron was hunting, a beautiful swan was quietly swimming nearby...

This osprey circled overhead looking for a catch of its' own...

A day later I found another great blue heron in a small stream...

This one had found a frog...

Their tall vantage point, long sharp beak and lightning-fast reflexes make them a force to be reckoned with...

Thanks for visiting, be well, and come back soon.

  1. Wow was the first thing that came to my mind. The way you captured the heron's calm precision and the surrounding wildlife paints a serene yet dynamic picture of nature at work. It’s always a privilege to witness such moments, and your ability to share them is truly special.

  2. Such graceful birds...even if their chosen foods seem yucky to me.
