Great Blue Heron Hunting

On an overcast day I found this great blue heron searching for a meal on a familiar log...

After a lightning quick strike I was surprised to see it come up with a stick...

I can only guess that the bird mistook the stick for a water snake, a common food item.  It did not seem happy about its attempt to catch a meal...

Quickly getting over the failed attempt it was soon back into hunting mode...

The next attempt was a fully committed plunge into the water after whatever prey it had sighted...

Unfortunately, it came up expelling water with no prey to show for the attempt...

It turned and floundered its way back up onto the log...

It spent quite some time ruffling it's feathers and trying to dry out...

It finally settled down and continued staring into the water...

Thanks for visiting, be well and scroll down for more photos from a different day.
