Shooting Through the Roof

It is widely known that most wildlife, including birds, are not intimidated by automobiles.  Wildlife often see cars and trucks on a daily basis and learn that they are harmless, albeit noisy, things and learn to accept their presence.

Photographers can take advantage of this conditioning to traffic by using their vehicle as a mobile blind.  At least 95% of the photographs that I take of wildlife are taken from a vehicle.  If the subject animal is at such a distance that I will not startle it by getting out, I sometimes will stand near the vehicle and shoot over the roof or hood for a better angle.

For bird photography a sunroof can be indispensable when taking photos of a bird directly overhead.  I consider the sunroof so important that I would not likely consider purchasing an automobile without one.  All of the following photographs were taken through an open sunroof…
