The Promise of Spring, New Life and New Beginnings

Our anticipation builds each Spring as we prepare to visit the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.  Our favorite place to be at this time of year.
Everywhere one looks new life is emerging.  The young of the year grizzly bears are already out of their winter dens...

If we are lucky we may see young badger...

Spotting coyote pups depends largely on hearing about the location of a den...

Or happening upon one by chance, like the pup in the next photo...

Bison calves will be stretching their legs, jumping and kicking...

The older bison will be showing the little ones how to follow the yellow center line; all the better to create a bison jam when the tourists arrive...

Almost certainly there will be whitetail deer fawns...

As well as the larger mule deer...

Beavers are common in the area.  This family photo of an adult, juvenile, and young of the year was taken close to home in Maryland...

Black bear cubs will also be out, climbing and getting into mischief...

The largest member of the deer family, the moose, often is visible along Moose-Wilson Road...

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep will have young lambs when we arrive...

One would have to travel South, perhaps to Zion National Park, to see the other species of big horn sheep the Desert Big Horn...

The fastest land animal in North America lives in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Pronghorn...

The most common type of fox seen in the area is the Red Fox...

A less common variant of Red Fox is the melanistic Cross Fox...

One of our favorite animals to observe is the River Otter...

Otters display a joyful exuberance for life no matter what they are doing...

A drive to the Bear Tooth Mountains is often rewarded with a sighting of Mountain Goats...

Even if the goats are not seen, they live in some spectacular terrain...

This is a longer post than I usually make.  I hope it will hold you until we arrive in the Greater Yellowstone area and I am able to post new photographs of wildlife from our trip.

Thanks for visiting, be well, and come back soon.
