Bandelier National Monument, Los Alamos, New Mexico

Bandelier National Park preserves the ancient homes of the Pueblo culture.  Cheryl hiked some of the trails and took these photos with her cell phone.

The area has numerous cavetes, (excavations in the volcanic tuff used for human habitation).  In fact, one section of Frijoles Canyon contains a complex of over 1000 excavations...

Human occupation of the area has been dated to 11,000 years ago. The most recent pueblo construction probably dates to around the year 1500.  There is a mixture of original dwellings and some reconstructed houses that visitors are encouraged to explore...

Some of the structures were built on the canyon floor...

Be warned that some trails become very narrow...

Located in the same vicinity is the Valles Caldera National Preserve, created about 1,200 years ago by a volcanic eruption thought to be 500 times the size of Mt. Saint Helens...

Thanks for visiting, be well, come back soon, and remember that all who wander are not lost.
