Red-bellied Woodpecker

I often have wondered how the red-bellied woodpecker got its name.  The small amount of red on its belly is pale and often hard to see.  I suppose the name "red-headed woodpecker" was already taken.  In any event, this woodpecker is plentiful, noisy and beautiful...

If you offer suet, in addition to your usual bird seeds, you may attract one of these beauties to your feeding station.
