Assateague is probably best known for the wild horses that inhabit the island...
These small horses are extremely popular with visitors...
How did these horses get to the island?
From the official government website: "Local folklore describes the Assateague horses as survivors of a shipwreck off the Virginia coast. While this dramatic tale of struggle and survival is popular, there are no records yet that confirm it."
The horses are plentiful and easily seen but there is other wildlife on the island...
This was the first time that we saw wild turkeys...
Rusty blackbirds...
Osprey...
My favorite encounter on this trip was watching a great egret stalk and catch an eel...
