REMEMBERING GRIZZLY 399...The Early Years

It has been a week and a day since the death of grizzly No. 399 in the Snake River Canyon south of Jackson. Sad news indeed for the many fans who had followed her on social media and in person. Speaking for myself and our family 399 was a highlight of each trip to Grand Teton National Park.  We first encountered her in 2008, the summer she parted from her three cubs born in 2006.

I was able to photograph her interacting with a coyote near Willow Flats as she searched for food, perhaps too near the coyotes’ den...

The coyote repeatedly darted in to nip at 399 on the flanks...

399 finally had had enough and chased the pesky coyote off...

After their parting the male cub left the area, but the two females hung around and provided some wonderful photo opportunities. We encountered them several times during our stay and never tired of seeing them...

Many others were delighted to see them as well...

A patrol officer from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said "The bear stepped right out into the road," the driver "was unable to brake in time to avoid the bear." The driver was was not speeding and the bear's death was an accident according to law enforcement.

I will be posting more about 399 and her legacy in the near future.  In the meantime, I will leave you with this image of one of her cubs trying to catch a butterfly...

Thanks for visiting, be well, and come back soon.
