In late July we paid a visit to Doddridge County, West Virginia to attend a family reunion. While there we took a bike ride on the section of the North Bend Rails to Trail path from West Union to Central Station. The photo above is of Arnolds' Creek.
When I moved away in 1968 the present trail was still an active railroad line. Now it is a beautiful hiker, biker, equestrian and cross-country ski path...
One of the notable landmarks is Tunnel No.6, also known as the Central Station Tunnel...
This tunnel is 2,207 feet in length, making it the longest tunnel on the 72-mile long North Bend Rail to Trail...
It is fairly dark at the mid-point, and I recommend having a light to avoid the potholes and other obstacles one might encounter.
The most memorable part of our ride, at least for me, occurred at mile marker 50.8 where a picnic table invites one to stop for a drink or a picnic lunch.
For the entire time that we lingered at the picnic table not a sound could be heard except the natural sounds of countless birds and a gentle breeze. With apologies to Simon and Garfunkel, the noise mentioned in the title was the "sound of silence".
It is rare to have more than the briefest moment of silence in the world in which we live. I treasure such interludes and try to note them when they happen.
Thanks for visiting, be well, and come back soon.
