Beavers Making Themselves A Home

The day before yesterday, while looking for photo opportunities, I passed a beaver den where I had seen and photographed beavers in the past.  There was an adult swimming but it submerged before I could take more than one photo...

The next day (yesterday) I returned before sunrise to see if being there earlier would provide more opportunities.  Sure enough, both adult beavers were bringing sticks to the den site...

Their behavior did not seem very productive to me.  This one leaned the stick against the roots of a tree.  It did sort of resemble the beginning of a lodge and perhaps satisfied the beaver's instictive desire to build a traditional dwelling...

After placing the stick to it's satisfaction it set off to find another...

When it returned a second time it had a much larger limb that it carried up the bank and deposited behind the tree...

I can only think that it was trying to get some limbs above the high water mark in case of heavy rains.  As it turned to return to the creek it began filling its mouth with grass...

When it entered the water it quickly dove beneath the surface.  Perhaps to deposit the grass in the den for bedding material...

Be sure to stop back soon as I continue to try to document the beaver's activity.
